During our lives we will inevitably encounter both health and social care services, both are there to help us live well in the place of our choice. For me though this can go further in how we predict services and find ways in which we improve outcomes for people, through using a common language both verbally and digitally we can not only respond to deterioration but begin to predict it.
At sea you must understand each system, how it interfaces with another and the impact it will have if it fails, equally how to mitigate that risk and find a solution to any issue. Systems like people are complex, however, technology has helped us in joined-up thinking but there is still a long way to go, equally to learn, how we might predict outcomes in the future that could be pro-active rather than our reliance on reactive linear processes in systems such as the NHS.
A system that I have worked in for the last 25 years is the NHS, as a nurse we advocate for patients, escalate our concerns using a common language NEWS2. This language spans the whole of the NHS, mental health and our ambulance services. Now being introduced into primary care it helps people to have a bigger voice by validating their worries and concerns but also to be heard by the people who interpret the NEWS2 score and respond both verbally and digitally.
As we live longer with more complex health conditions the NEWS2 score can enhance the information provided to a decision maker, advances in technology have enabled us to remove translation errors by using Bluetooth, send data digitally to responders and now enable us the predict probable outcomes through AI.
All of this relies on the quality of the information taken and received, implementing systems is equally as complex, as we interface, we need to better understand people, their relationships as they move through health and social care to build a trusted resilient system that prevents people falling through the gaps and being harmed.
Collaboration is key
Partnering with organisations such as the CIHFE, Q and Universities brings wider understanding, validation and a different lens to each project
